In a massive feat, ComfortDelGro Corporation Australia (CDC) Victoria have taken delivery of their 50th Volvo B5L S-Charge hybrid bus from CMV Truck & Bus Sales Consultant, Anthony Fisicaro, and our Derrimut team.
This delivery confirms CDC Victoria as having the largest hybrid bus fleet in Australia and is a huge milestone for not only the company, but also for Victoria’s public transport network.

Anthony and our Derrimut team were thrilled to be able to assist CDC Victoria on their quest to reduce their carbon and particulate emissions. Since the introduction of the Volvo B5L S-Charge hybrid buses to their fleet in April 2019, CDC Victoria have not only successfully reduced their emissions, but also their fuel consumption and noise pollution levels.
“CDC Victoria and CMV Truck & Bus have had a long-standing relationship, supporting each other not only in buses, but other community activities. CDC Victoria is an important part of our plans moving towards greener vehicles,” says Anthony.
CDC Victoria CEO, Jeff Wilson, said the completion of the Melbourne hybrid fleet is a significant milestone in the company’s mission to reduce their emissions.
“In just over three years, the CDC Victoria hybrid fleet has reduced fuel use by over 826,000 litres and prevented the release of over 2,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions, compared to the vehicles the hybrids replaced."
The incredible technology employed by Volvo in their B5L model is the most fuel efficient on the market, with air conditioning, power steering and brakes a few of the features electrically powered, not only saving fuel, but also allowing the bus to be fully operational even when the diesel engine is switched off.
Additionally, they are now fitted with Volvo’s Zone Management system which triggers the hybrid system to operate exclusively in electric mode in designated urban areas. This significantly reduces noise and stops exhaust emissions while in the zero-emissions zone.
This tried and tested technology has certainly impressed the team at CDC Victoria.
“While the different technologies – such as battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell – have benefits that we will take advantage of as we advance through our zero-emissions vehicle journey, one of the great things about our Volvo Volgren hybrid buses is that they benefit from mature technology which is available for use, right now,” says Jeff.
Anthony and our team were proud to work with CDC Victoria to explore the Volvo technology that best suits the application and the businesses’ sustainability values.
“The fact that CDC Victoria having the largest Hybrid fleet shows their commitment to both Volvo and the environment, and we have enjoyed working collaboratively on this journey,” says Anthony.
The journey to carbon neutrality is just beginning for CDC Victoria with the company now ramping up on the electric front.
“We also have embarked the next chapter with eight zero-emission buses set to be delivered over the next 12 months”, says Anthony.
Thank you to the team at CDC Victoria for allowing us to assist you in supplying this incredible hybrid fleet, and for your support of CMV Truck & Bus and Volvo Group Australia.
